The Cluster Effect: What 15,988 Lateral Moves Reveal About H1 2026
Firm Prospects analyzed 15,988 recorded moves into and out of the Am Law 200 to map where lateral movement concentrated in H1 2026 — by firm, by route, and by month, in and out of the Am Law 200.
The report also showcases the first Firm Prospects Index, a recurring, citable benchmark of how elite legal talent moves across the AmLaw 200. It measures the actual flow of lawyers between law schools, firms and practice groups, built on proprietary data that competitors structurally lack.
One In Eight Lateral Hires Didn't Move Alone
Some lateral moves are one lawyer, one decision. Others aren't.
In H1 2026, nearly 1 in 8 firm-to-firm lateral movers arrived at their new firm in the same month as at least two colleagues from the same origin firm, and at several major firms, those same-month clusters accounted for more than half of all firm-to-firm arrivals.
The Cluster Effect breaks down where that concentration is happening, which routes are carrying the most volume, how seniority shifts inside a cluster, and what's pulling talent toward a brand-new destination category: AI companies.
Actionable Insights
1. See where the market concentrated, not just where it moved
403 routes carried 3+ attorneys across H1. 209 of those tightened into same-month clusters, including 25 Ballard Spahr lawyers arriving at Barnes & Thornburg in a single February, and 20 McGlinchey Stafford lawyers landing at Womble Bond Dickinson in one January. The report names the routes, the months, and the firms.
2. Know the seniority signal before your competitors do
Partners make up 41.1% of attorneys moving on high-volume routes, but 48.3% of same-month cluster movers, and 53.7% when a cluster also shares a destination city. The tighter the cluster, the more senior the talent involved.
3. Track the newest destination category: AI companies
46 lawyers left Am Law 200 firms for AI companies in H1, including 15 who took "legal engineer" roles that didn't exist a few years ago. Harvey, Anthropic, OpenAI and Legora lead the list.
4. Benchmark your firm against the market
The Firm Prospects Index shows median, 75th-percentile and 90th-percentile figures for firm-to-firm arrivals, total exits, partner share, route share and cluster share, so you can see exactly where your firm sits, not just where the market moved.
What data is this based on?
Every figure comes from the Firm Prospects database — all recorded moves into and out of the Am Law 200 between January 1 and June 30, 2026: 15,988 move records in total, including 8,804 firm-to-firm moves.
How do you define a "cluster"?
A route is 3+ attorneys moving from the same origin firm to the same destination firm at any point in H1. A same-month cluster is 3+ attorneys on that route who moved in the same recorded month. Neither measure proves the attorneys made a joint decision or were recruited as a team — they're signals of concentration and timing, not conclusions.
Is this available for my specific practice, market, or competitor set?
